PRISON MEMORY (by Bahtiyar Hidayet)

The prison food was of poor quality,
The prisoners' food was brought from home.

The prison warden fed his pigs
with that poor quality food.

But there were religious books in every room.

Everyone read them as if they owed God.
The "respectable" prisoners,
with their own money had even built a mosque there.

This religion was profitable for the prison warden.

There was a prisoner carrying food in the corridor.

The man did not have an ounce of respect.
There were 4 or 5 cats around him,
4-5 kilos heavier than a normal cat.

They ate the prisoners' leftovers,
The cats were as fat as pigs.

When the prisoner sometimes went for a walk, the cats would go and rest on the beds.

One day the food carrier was released.
The poor cats were orphaned.

Like a prisoner waiting for the food he cooked in his house, the cats were waiting for him at any moment.

That food carrier thought that,
because of the respect he showed the cats,
God had supported him and he was released,
And he would never return to such a place again.

The person who replaced the food carrier
chased the cats to "freedom".

They returned to prison again.

For them, freedom was torture;
their spirits were completely exhausted.

They were released again,
They died of hunger and disease.

Sometimes the "orphan" prisoners in the prison died for the same reason.

At that time, "respectable" prisoners
held funerals for the deceased prisoners.

The prisoner, who acted as a mullah, mainly recited hadiths from Abu Hurayrah.

Most of the "respectable" prisoners here
had been in prison many times before.

Seeing the injustice of freedom,
they committed crimes and returned to prison.

Perhaps this process was the law of circulation and science itself was helpless.

Commentary on "Prison Memory"

This poem is a powerful, darkly satirical allegory about institutionalization, systemic hypocrisy, and the illusion of freedom. Through sharp contrasts—between the mistreated human inmates and the overfed prison cats, or the performative piety of the "respectable" prisoners and their actual cruelty—the author paints a devastating picture of a closed society that mirrors the flaws of the outside world.

Key Themes & Observations

  • The Paradox of Freedom: The most striking motif in the poem is how freedom becomes a punishment rather than a salvation. For both the cats and the recidivist prisoners, the outside world is hostile, unfamiliar, and fatal. Institutional walls offer a perverse safety, proving that captivity can condition souls until liberty feels like torture.

  • Performative Piety and Hypocrisy: The presence of religious books in every room and the mosque built by "respectable" prisoners highlight a profound moral dissonance. Religion here is transactional—it benefits the warden by maintaining order and serves as a badge of self-righteousness for repeat offenders, yet it exists alongside stark human suffering and systemic neglect.

  • Dehumanization and Irony: The warden feeding prison food to his pigs, while the cats grow "as fat as pigs" on leftover scraps, creates a grim hierarchy where animals are sometimes better nourished than vulnerable human inmates. The final comparison between the fate of the orphaned cats and the "orphan" prisoners ties their tragedies together.

  • The Cycle of Recidivism: The "respectable" prisoners who commit crimes just to return expose a cyclical trap. The system doesn't rehabilitate; it institutionalizes, making integration into normal society impossible.

Literary Style

The poem uses a deceptively simple, narrative-driven style reminiscent of a fable or folklore. However, its biting cynicism and bleak ending strip away any comforting moral lessons typically found in fables. The concluding reflection—that this vicious cycle might be an inescapable "law of circulation" defying even science—leaves the reader with a haunting sense of resignation.

TRADUZIONE

I prigionieri "rispettabili",

i gatti andavano a riposare sui letti.

I poveri gatti erano rimasti orfani,

Per loro la libertà era una tortura;

A quel punto, i prigionieri "rispettabili"

era già stata in prigione molte volte in passato.

Vendendo l'ingiustizia della libertà,
commettevano crimini e tornavano in prigione.
